Australian Shepherds

ABOUT US

Welcome to my site. With the help of my husband who is the site designer, I have thoroughly enjoyed putting it together and hope that you enjoy wandering around the site to see what my dogs and I get up to.

We are a small kennel situated behind the Rietvlei wetlands in Flamingo Vlei Cape Town. All our Australian Shepherds are family pets and are "inside dogs" We will only ever have as many dogs as we feel we can cope with and that the dogs we do have, will get the love and attention this stunning breed deserves. Our dogs are all trained in or are in training for competition obedience, contact and non contact agility, dog jumping and flyball. All of these disciplines are thoroughly enjoyed by our Australian Shepherds and by myself. I have discovered that I am still fiercely competitive and love competing with my dogs and it sure keeps me fit. We do our training at the Cape Handlers Dog Club in Milnerton where we take part in the training and active participation of all these disciplines. When we are not taking part in one of the club activities or other dog sports, my husband and I can often be seen walking our dogs on the Blouberg beach front, or free running them on the wetland area where we live.
I also exhibit in breed conformation shows which the dogs fortunately enjoy and I have met many wonderful helpful people in this field who have taught me a great deal of what I know about conformation showing. Some of them have gone on to be become good friends. Breed showing has on the whole been a wonderful learning curve for me.

The Australian Shepherd as a breed is relatively new to South Africa with the first Aussie being brought into the country in 1998. I saw my first Aussie in 2004 and fell in love with a dog I ‘just had to have’. At the time I had two dogs and did not feel I could cope with another, so I had to settle for watching this particular Aussie grow up and advance through the various disciplines he and his owner were participating in. Watching him grow and develop made me even more determined to get “an Aussie”. After loosing my German Shepherd to surgical complications, I felt I could get another dog and my quest for an “Aussie” began. I got my first Aussie in 2006. I expected to be getting a "nice dog" with a bit more energy than the average dog. In fact... just another dog. After all the years that I have been involved in the ‘dog world’ and with the dogs my family has owned. I never expected a specific breed to have such an impact on me or on our lives as the Australian Shepherd has done. Our first ‘little Aussie’ wiggled her way straight into our hearts. They say that you have never loved a dog till you have loved an Aussie. I have had dogs all my life and still today, marvel at how much I enjoy this breed. The same can be said for my husband. It did not take Ciara long to get him to do just what she wanted him to do. This soon led to us getting our second Aussie, Mieka. Need I say then the third ?Cassidy. Our fouth Aussie, Mr Magee is my pick of the litter from Ciara's first litter. All four get on well with each otehr and all our cats as well.

"He is your friend, your partner, your protector, your companion, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."
